Are Male Prostitutes covered in the Newly Passed Republic Act 10158?

Republic Act 10158 or an act decriminalizing vagrancy which amends Article 202 of the Revised Penal Code was signed by the President on the 27th of March 2012. The said law also iterates criminal punishment to prostitutes which angered Gabriela Women’s Party (GWP). PNoy, by penning R.A. 10158, actually affirmed that prostitute women are criminals. Nothing is offensive when the law decriminalize vagrancy (a state of being homeless or unable to settle in a single place) but making prostitution a criminal act is like “crucifying women”. According to GWP Representative Emmi De Jesus, the law is anti-women and anti poverty ... Read more

Is there a Perfect Formula for Philippine Prosperity?

Undeniably, the Philippines is blessed with natural resources. Being one of the top 10 biologically mega-diverse countries, the nation has more than 100 mammal species and 170 bird species that are endemic to its territory – a zesty tourists lure. Its location in the pacific ring of fire made the Philippines a potential mega-producer of geothermal energy and being rich with strongly flowing water bodies, the country can produce as much as 13,426 MW of electricity – both are renewable energy sources. The Philippines is also the 5th mineralized country and with significantly abundant fossil fuel and natural gas reserves. ... Read more

NoyNoying: Portraying the President’s Idle Gestures

Noynoying, in courtesy for those who heard the word for the first time, are gestures used to mimic the inaction or the “laziness” of the president in addressing various issues of the country like surging oil prices. This includes PNoy’s relaxed sitting and smoking position and the copied popular 500-peso bill gesture of his father. It was featured today (March 15, 2012) by the group of youth protesters who joined PISTON, along with KMU and some other leftists, to stage the transport caravan. Noynoying is exclusive to the Philippines and is shown for the first time to the general public ... Read more

Lectures! More Fun in the Philippines

Lectures, in the Philippines, are not only held in classrooms, business conferences or meetings, company-related functions, or tutorials sessions but also in a court hearing, broadcasted live and or in delayed telecast on the national television. While the impeachment trial is one of the most followed telenovela-like series on most of the Philippine broadcast channels,  the impeachment court is acting as the classroom for the feisty law mentor, Senator-Judge Miriam Defensor-Santiago. With the principal (Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile) and fellows (The rest of the Senator Judges) watching, the lady senator is teaching the prosecution team constitutional laws. What a shame that ... Read more

Philippines’ Claim over Spratlys, Illegal?

The Philippines could not claim sovereignty over Spratlys on the basis of geographic proximity, risk to national security, and by the principle of terra nullius. Thus, the Philippines’ claim over Spratlys or part of Spratlys is illegal, declared Spratlys.org (a website advocating for Nansha Islands of China, China’s name for Spratlys). The said website also supported their conclusion on why such claim is illegal. According to the website, there is no international law stating that geographical proximity can be used to justify the claim. Because saying so means some isolated islands of Sulu should belong to Brunei and not to ... Read more

Severus Snape: My New Favorite Harry Potter Character

Wow! I don’t read the books so I only found this out when I saw the final installment of Harry Potter Series- Severus Snape is protecting Harry Potter from the very beginning. He is Hogwart’s Potions Master, though he is widely rumoured to covet the Defence Against the Dark Arts post as shown in the first book. Snape is a sinister and malicious teacher who makes frequent snide and disparaging remarks at Harry’s expense. He quickly becomes the primary antagonist of the book, as Harry suspects him of plotting to steal the philosopher’s stone, and of attempting to kill him. ... Read more

Freedom: Redefined

I watched Balitanghali early this afternoon on GMANews.tv and I found one irritating comment from one of their twitter followers. The news is about the prenuptial photos proliferating over the internet which were shot at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Several people are sensitive on these since they found it rude and a form of disrespect to the history’s heroes. Personally, I am not against it, I mean, I see no rude things in the photos…cool when I first saw it. But I am also not in favor of what they did. I am sorry but I am not that ... Read more
