I was quite surprised when I saw two foreign women carrying their cross in the San Pedro Cutud’s annual “Via Crucis”. Both were in shades while one of them was in boots. They were given permit only to film the rites however they angered the organizers when they took part of the procession by bearing their own cross.

Eventually, they were not allowed to reach the “Mount Calvary” nor permitted to be crucified.

Foreigners were banned from participating in the crucifixion rites since the Australian comic used a false name when he was being nailed few years ago. Also, in 1996, a Japanese man sought to be crucified for a porn film.

On the other hand, a woman from Bulacan named Baby Mondares wasn’t allowed to be nailed on the cross when she failed to submit a required waiver.

This year’s crucifixion re-enactment in San Pedro Cutud, San Fernando, Pampanga drew international attention. The Filipinos’ bizarre way of religiosity was actually long been discouraged by the Catholic Church. Authorities admitted that they cannot change the people’s beliefs.
