So-net Entertainment Corporation, an internet service provider (ISP) subsidiary of Sony Corporation, has launched a fiber optic internet service that provides download speed of 2 Gbps, making it the fastest home internet in the world. The connection, which utilizes FTTH (fiber-to-home) infrastructure, is initially available in Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Saitama in Japan.
The Nuro, the commercial name of the service, speeds up the internet services of both homes and small businesses in the aforementioned territories. The service cost 4,980 Yen (US$51) with a two-year contract.
The Nuro Subscribers are given an optical network unit (ONU) which comes outfitted with three Gigabit ethernet ports and supports 450 Mbps over IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n, part of the 52,500 yen (US$535) installation fee package.
The upload speed is slower, by the way, at 1 Gbps, but is still 100 times faster than the world’s average download speed.
